    Personally, I just want an SC2 clone with fresh maps and maybe a few less spells. Stormgate seems like it's trying to please everyone, but in doing so is pleasing nobody. Go all in with WC3 style or SC2.. You won't please everyone so don't try to.

    Uh that is an awesome take about sc2 being a very isolated experience. I had the exact same feeling and it is crazy that it even felt that way for a gm level player… yeah I guess if you don’t happen to have some nerd friends who are also into rts and even the same rts you are playing it’s gonna be this way… and the joint probability of all of this becomes very low it feels like 😅 it’s not 25 years ago where everyone was playing the same 3 multiplayer games and 1 or then was an rts. I think it is an awesome point you are making about the plat player who has to have some purpose logging in that is not „let’s get my few shitty noob games over with before I jump over to UA-cam to watch pros play ‚the real game‘“

    I really like creep camps as just like an environmental hazard. Like if there's a really strong position, but there's a powerful creep camp there, you could aggro it to help break the position, or you could bait out camps to keep you from getting chased across the map. Or something like, if you kick this hornets nest, they attack air units that try to cross this dead-space stuff like that.

    Funny you say watching 1v1 is the extent of the community lol. Its so true, i hardly play sc2 maybe like 2 games a week. Game is too hard tbh (coming from a diamond zerg) and id rather just watch the pros. Games at my level are just not that fun. Sc2 too hard, storm gate is trash, battle aces is sweet but doesnt last long and feels like a arcade game. Aoe4 is cool but also annoying. Oh well

    These r great ideas but....The problem is there wont ever be a decent sized community in Battle Aces StormGate or Zerospace because as much as Content Creators want to hand-waive it off. People care about Concept Art and they dont want to play a game that makes them feel childish or silly for playing.

    I love battle aces. It's a very well designed game with a focused goal of what it wants to be. It makes stormgate look so confused in comparison. I'm definitely on team Battle Aces for the future, it's a game that I know i will just pick up and play if i have 20-30 mins free, where other games I enjoy like StarCraft BW and WoW Classic I can only play when i have 2-3 hours free.

    While I get that pro players don't really care about interacting with the campaign themselves.. I think that just ignoring it altogether is going to make it impossible to see the bigger picture of how RTS communities work - RTS games can't really be split up into the PvP mode and campaign mode as cleanly as that, because I think most players determine whether they want to play the game in the PvP modes or not based on their first impressions, and for most people their first impressions are usually from the campaign even if pro players don't interact with it much. If the campaign turns out really well, then that usually also means that there will be a lot of players that are trying the PvP modes once they're done with the campaign too, which creates a much more active community and better matchmaking outcomes (and also more likely to have meaningful tournaments too because there's more of an audience for it - very few people will watch tournaments of a game that they've never played regardless of how interesting the game mechanics of it are). You can't really "design a game for esports" - pretty much by far the most important thing for an esport (other than the obvious which is that it needs to have a competitive game mode) is just having an active community in general, and making an active community just means making a good game in general (even if the things that make it good aren't things that people at the pro level interact with). The biggest esports games don't really get that way because of how they're designed at the pro level, they get there because they're just popular games in general and the pro level stuff is just something that develops naturally after the game is already popular (as long as the balance isn't absolutely atrocious anyway).

    Mechabellum is great, such a simple but effective tournament system to give you that little bit of community. It's automated, low overhead, not hardcore, yet people care about it and you get a little badge next to your name until the next tournament to brag about if you get a good result. And they had mini touronaments more frequently and weekly tourneys that have a bit more 'prestige'. A good balance. And there's enough people that you don't feel like you're fighting the same people every time but few enough that you do get to know some of your opponents over a few matchups. I gotta start playing again :)

      I'm not sure how it is nowadays, but I used to play quite a bit of 2v2 and 3v3 and it was a great time. I feel like people also overexagerate that "nobody played or cared for it", cuz the queue times were not that different from 1v1 (except for really high elo).

    • @stevenjaconette
      @stevenjaconette День тому

      @@tomarts774still play a ton of 3v3 and 2v2 with friends. I dunno about the heyday but the queue is really dry these days. I feel like I kinda "know" all the NA players. Amplifying the problem is the ratings: you get a fresh mmr if even one team member changes, and this naturally causes all teams to cluster must more heavily around a narrow mmr range. You have to be winning every game, scraping 1-2 mmr at a time, to crack above masters 3.

    I agree with your hero take. When i think of warcraft3 i think of 3v3. I know its mainly a 1v1 game but i think wc3 1v1 is awful and sc2 is the game to play 1v1. And hero diversity is a good idea. Have multiple builds for each hero with 1 not being the best. Like the girl. Have 1 version ment to be a damage dealer, another for stealthy and evasive harrass, and another for utility during team fights to buff, debuff, or damage prevention mechanics on the hero or units. But make them worth it to go each path so we dont see the same build everygame because its just the best and doing anything else with that hero is less efficent.

    Agree with all your viewpoints except two. First: In contrast to you, I really do not like the "Frost Giants", at least their marketing. Never saw such an arrogant, know-it-all game promotion. That alone could have stopped me from playing. Makes me sick. Second: I'm one of those guys that absolutely doesn't give a shit about multiplayer :D I am only into 1v1, this makes a game fun to me. That feeling of "speedy chess", strategics and the thrill. Love it. Also love to watch it, there is nothing better than Starcraft to me. Especially at the current state, Stormgate cannot compete this. Which is sad because I was also hyped.

    I don’t see a reason to play stormgate. In many ways it is so close to classic blizzard rts, which are far more polished and feature full than stormgate will probably ever be. At best, it feels like another rts in the same vein with different races and mechanics to explore, but I don’t think that is enough to draw in a large community to support it as a f2p game. The most important part of monetizing a f2p game is the presentation, not many are going to buy cosmetics in an ugly game.

    One idea for clan/group play.. adding a sort of clan war/tournament mode that takes place over a few hours and is a series of matches. Mix of 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and Co-Op vs PVE objectives at various levels of difficulty. The fights are over objectives that boost the team or progress the war. Could either be something clans do, or streamers with their communities vs other streamers and their communities. Final 1v1 could be the streamer or clan leader/champion vs the other clan's, with all the bonuses/benefits/penalties that their teams accrued during the war.

      That's an interesting take to me, as I felt the opposite after 52 hours of game time and I just want way more, even after after attaining top ace. The quicker optimized game format made for a more satisfying improvement of my game play that made it addictive to keep trying to improve and seeing results. The learning cycle was much quicker, that If I was determined to fix in flaws in my play, In 4 hours I could spam out like 40+ matches and really evolve my play style developing optimizing multiple decks in real time to counter multiple kinds of threats. That would take a week of solid testing and practice in other RTS games or even longer. Also, the deck building system allowed the game to not feel completely solved. There would be a changing meta but with occasional opponents always trying off meta deck ideas, it would keep things fresh enough, at least for me. A part of me think that if you where to seriously grind out a few hours to see your assumption was correct, your opinion may change after being more hands on, but hard to say as maybe my positive experience I had would not necessarily be replicated for everyone.

    Firstly fantastic video, great to see an open hearted critique of a genre you love. I'm Starcraft 2 diamond league player and level 1,000 in Co-op with a degree in game design. The issue in RTS games is the matchmaking system and how it shapes the reward curve for players. In a well designed reward curve you're going to win at least 80% of the time. The MMR system makes this impossible in PVP. The reason why co-op has an exponentially larger player pool is because the AI absorbs the losses so that players can nearly always win. Team games help to mitigate this by removing some of the blame on the individual player so that losses don't always feel like losses. In team games you can lose the overall game but feel like you win personally by out competing your team.

    • @LogicalMayhem00
      @LogicalMayhem00 2 дні тому

      This is one of the primary reasons that people smurf, The climb on the ladder feels much better than the plateau. This further poisons the player experience for the lower ranks making them incredibly toxic.

    • @WhenIHit88MPH
      @WhenIHit88MPH 2 дні тому

      I don't mind the plateau, but climbing the ladder does feel incredibly rewarding. I picked up sc2 in early 2020, and got hooked. I had played rts campaigns in wc3 before, but in 2020 was the first time I learned a build order. Watching vibes b2gm also helped me enjoy laddering a lot. Now I play street fighter 6 and it's equally addicting improving at that 1v1 competitive game.

    • @WhenIHit88MPH
      @WhenIHit88MPH 2 дні тому

      Correction, I probably would never have gotten into sc2 if it weren't for the incredible resource that was vibes b2gm. A huge hurdle in playing competitive 1v1 games is catching up to the accumulated knowledge of the community, especially for such an old game. This is partially why I enjoy street fighter 6 so much, and it's because I started playing the game only months after release, which had me starting on a somewhat level playing field compared to the other players, who were skilled at fighting games, but had yet to become accustomed to 6.

    ViBE the monetization of Frost Giant is not fair. I read on steam that some users paid 10€ for each commander and for every 3 missions of the campaign. They need to change their monetization policy if they want people's support. If you ask me, I don't care to pay 100€ for a complete game and then pay 10-15€ for campaign episodes with story and 5€ for new coop heroes. Or 80-100€ for an expansion that is worthy!
